material: oil on canvas
dimensions: 64 × 80 cm
description: In 1892, Władysław Podkowiński met Feliks Jasieński, who invited the former, failing in health at that time, to spend the next year’s holidays in the region of Sandomierz, in Sobótka near Opatów and in nearby Bidziny – the estates which belonged to the collector’s family. The artist painted numerous landscapes there, in which his perception of nature changed. Wilczyce – the Clover Field is a vast landscape with the composition based on the horizontal combination of subsequent parts of the view, which was characteristic of Podkowiński. They are marked by the colourful stretches of fields, the forest, shadowed rural buildings and the sky, which determine the impression of harmony and tranquillity. The colours of the composition are subdued, with the predominance of cool tones; the dominant colour is a wedge of pink separating dull patches of green and blue. The simplification of forms and the rejection of descriptive elements give the work a synthetic, almost abstract quality. Moreover, Podkowiński becomes here a kind of precursor of Synthetism in Polish art. Urszula Kozakowska-Zaucha
exposition: The Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art in Sukiennice,
The Cloth Hall, 1, Main Market Square
key: Realism, polish impressionism, beginnings of symbolism >>>
