description: This work is a loose copy of the painting executed in 1845 by Jan Nepomucen Głowacki entitled A View from Wawel over the Kościuszko Mound and Bielany. Aleksander Płonczyński was a student of Głowacki at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow. Later, from 1847, he taught landscape painting there. In accordance with the Romantic tendencies of the era, this painting shows two “intimate places,” which were extremely important for Polish people at that time: the Wawel hill and the symbolic grave of Tadeusz Kościuszko, a mound raised on the Hill of Blessed Bronisława between 1820 and 1823. The composition was painted from a terrace located in the remains of the tower known as the Bastion of Władysław IV. In 1921, many years after the execution of the painting, an equestrian monument of Tadeusz Kościuszko was erected on its top. In the background, one can see the so-called Vasa Gate built by Sigismund III. The central part of the composition is occupied by the bend of the Vistula river. The mound of the Commander is visible in the distance, over the districts of Zwierzyniec and Dębniki. The work is characterized by subdued colours, smooth modelling and too much attention paid to details. Aleksandra Krypczyk
