One of them was Teresa Poniatowska, née Kinska, (1740–1806), the wife of the king’s brother, Andrzej Poniatowski, an officer in the Austrian army. She came from a Czech count’s family of Kinski, loyal to Habsburgs. Poniatowski met her while staying among Czech aristocrats, he fell in love with her, and his love was reciprocated. Although she came from a good family and was in Empress Maria Theresa’s good graces, Teresa was not very rich, and that is why members of the Poniatowski family opposed to the wedding for a long time. Andrzej’s brothers, who wanted him to be happy, provided him with the annual pension in the amount of two thousand ducats, and Stanisław, the future king of Poland, gave him some of the diamonds brought from Russia. The couple got married in 1760, and they had two children: Maria Teresa and Józef, the future Polish national hero. Stanisław August Poniatowski hung the portrait of Teresa Poniatowska in the Dining Room in the Łazienki Palace together with other works depicting members of his family. Barbara Ciciora
